PRAYER FOR A NEW BISHOP

Praise to you, Lord our God, our eternal shepherd and guide.

In your faithfulness, grant to the Diocese of Saskatoon

a shepherd whose watchful care and kindly zeal

will continue the good work of his predecessors.

In your love for us, give us a shepherd who will lead us

in being Christ’s heart of mercy, voice of hope, and hands of justice.

May our new bishop fill our minds and hearts

with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments,

and the desire to build up your holy Church.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

Statements on federal issues by Catholic Bishops of Canada:

  • The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) have issued a statement on the passage of Bill C-16 Regarding Gender Identity and Gender Expression. The CCCB statement can be found online at: http://www.cccb.ca
  • CCCB President’s Letter to Minister of Foreign Affairs - The Most Reverend Douglas Crosby, O.M.I., Bishop of Hamilton and President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), has written to the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, regarding her 6 June 2017 speech on Canadian foreign policy. In her speech to the House of Commons, the Minister equated women's rights with the right to abortion and "sexual reproductive rights", claiming "[t]hese rights are at the core of Canadian foreign policy." In his letter, Bishop Crosby expresses his profound concern and disagreement, calling the statement "erroneous, confusing, and misguided." He recalls that "many women's issues that actually ought to have been raised as legitimate points of international engagement ... were passed over in silence. They include Canada's economic partnerships with countries in which female infants are murdered for not being male; those in which women earn less than men for the same job or where they do not enjoy the same privileges under the law, including the right to education or protection from rape, physical violence, and other forms of abuse." Bishop Crosby points out that "for a considerable population (both within Canada and abroad) the unborn child is regarded as a human being created by God and worthy of life and love", while the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously acknowledged in its 1988 decision in the Morgentaler case that the state has a legitimate interest in protecting the unborn. The CCCB President insists that "in these uncertain times, when Canada's voice and leadership do matter on everything from climate change to global peace, political ideology cannot be allowed to dictate foreign policy and to override common sense and our humanitarian responsibilities to those in dire need." Find Bishop Crosby’s letter and more information at: http://www.cccb.ca

Choose Catholic Education – Register now for 2017-18 - For over a century, Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools has offered Catholic education for all who choose that for their children. Catholic education in Saskatchewan has never simply been schools for Catholics. A recent court decision (and subsequent appeals) has created some uncertainty for many families. We can be certain of two things: we will continue to be a welcoming community nurturing intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual growth of our students; and provincial funding for both Catholic and non-Catholic students will be in place for the foreseeable future. Register at your local school for the 2017-18 school year. www.gscs.ca/schools

Please consider donating to a legal fund for Catholic education court appeal - The eight Catholic school boards in the province are appealing a Theodore court case ruling that would remove funding for non-Catholic students in Catholic schools. The eight boards are asking for donations to help cover the cost of the appeal. See: https://www.catholicedspirit.ca or call the local Catholic school division at (306) 659-7000 for more information.

A new online community for youth in our diocese can be found at www.yxecatholic.com - our diocesan Youth Ministry Office has launched this website to help youth, young adults, and families encounter Christ, connect, and grow in their faith. Check it out! Bookmark it!

Africa Famine Relief Fund: The Canadian government announced that they will match funding for every donation for famine relief made by an individual to a registered charity between March 17 and June 30. Our Catholic Bishops have joined other faith groups in a joint appeal that is “a unified cry from the heart, with one voice and one message.” The faith groups are asking us to “Pray, Give and Speak Out” in response to the crisis in South Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and parts of Nigeria. Development and Peace has been responding for some time now and has good information on their website about the joint appeal, the situation on the ground, what is being done and how to donate. Please consider learning more and donating on-line at www.devp.org/en or by calling 1-888-664-3387.

The Canadian religious leaders’ “unified cry from the heart” calls for a threefold response from their faithful:

  • Pray: Remember the people of South Sudan, Somalia, northern Nigeria and Yemen in personal and community prayer, and to pray also for peace, for government leaders and for humanitarian workers in the region.
  • Give: Make a financial contribution to one or more of the various reputable Canadian aid agencies working to alleviate this crisis. Contributions made to a recognized Canadian charity between March 17 and June 30, 2017 will be matched by the Government of Canada with its recently announced “Famine Relief Fund”.
  • Speak out: Take the time to become better informed about the crisis in the four countries; to speak about it with family, friends and neighbours; to discuss it with local community agencies; and to contact Members of Parliament.

Donations can be sent electronically to any of the following Catholic aid agencies ready to forward contributions to assist efforts in the four countries:

Are you a golfer? Consider supporting the Prairie Hospice Society this year on August 21 at their Charity Golf Classic at the Saskatoon Golf and Country Club sponsored by Acadia McKague’s Funeral Centre. What is Prairie Hospice Society? Why should you help? Prairie Hospice Society is a registered Canadian Charity. Saskatoon does not have a Residential Hospice – a place where end-of-life (terminally ill) individuals can live out their last days, weeks and months in a warm, friendly, homey and safe environment.  They require a hospice when they lack the supports that would allow them to stay at home and die at home.  Prairie Hospice Society has developed a program called “Hospice without Walls” whereby we have trained over 100 volunteers to go into the homes of terminally people and provide them with non-medical hospice support and services.  At any given time, we are supporting 50 or more individuals and their families– so our mission is to help them LIVE until they die!  The satisfaction of our clients has been remarkably positive. Prairie Hospice Society does not receive any government support and is entirely reliant upon the generosity of individual donors, local companies, charitable organizations and granting agencies.  Our Charity Golf Classic has raised over $87,000 in the past two years.  The annual budget for Prairie Hospice (largely due to staffing costs – volunteer co-ordinators and office staff) is more than $140,000 per year. Join us on August 21, 1pm Saskatoon Golf & Country Club, entry $250 includes a partial charity receipt (reduced entry for SGCC members) and includes Dinner, Prizes & Silent Auction, non-competitive format. Register by: Phone: 306-249-5554, website: www.prairiehospice.org; email: admin.assist [at] prairiehospice.org; mail: 716 Queen Street, Saskatoon, SK S7K 0M9.
