Summary:

The timeless message of the New Testament applies to people of every culture and generation. Yet there is great value in understanding the world in which that message was first revealed - its social manners, politics, religious customs, and culture. Exploring the New Testament World, written by classics and Bible scholar Dr. Albert A. Bell, Jr., illuminates the living context of the New Testament, immersing its readers in the intriguing world of Jesus and the early church.

An authority on ancient Greek and Roman language, culture, and history, Dr. Bell writes in a readable style that is accessible and enjoyable to any reader - an uncommon accomplishment among New Testament scholars today. Surveying Jewish factions of the era, the social and political structure of the Roman Empire, and the philosophies and religions that surrounded the early church, Dr. Bell helps his readers learn to think like first-century Jews, Greeks, and Romans, illuminating puzzling New Testament passages for clear understanding. Comprehensive Scripture and Subject Indexes make this volume even more useful as a "manners and customs" Bible companion.

This authoritative guide receives high praise from college professors and Sunday school teachers alike, proving its appeal to both popular and academic audiences. A "must-have" reference for every pastor and an indispensable resource to any Bible reader.

Summary:

How can contemporary Christians use poems written half a millennium before Christ as the basis of their prayer? In The Lords Song in a Foreign Land, Father Wahl focuses on fifty of the most widely used psalms for Morning and Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours. Using the Grail translation for the Psalms, he provides a reflection for each day of a four-week cycle, examining how a particular psalm can serve as a reference for prayer. For the remaining psalms, he offers a prayer based on the biblical reading, comparing individuals' experience to that of Israel. The text of the psalm is included. The Lord's Song in a Foreign Land illustrates two characteristics of the psalms that make these ancient prayers suited to contemporary use: In biblical times the Jewish people prayed the psalms in a variety of circumstances (for example, as a prayer of thanksgiving for anyone that had been saved from mortal danger). Secondly, Christians and Jewish people have instinctively prayed the psalms as metaphors of their own experience from the beginning.Father Wahl stresses that the psalms, rich in language, were originally intended for people to use on reoccurring occasions (in a psalm for a recovery from an illness, the prayer applied to whatever the illness). Similarly, a prayer for a blessing on a reigning king was later used to express the desire for a messiah. He shows that even by the time the psalms were collected, such prayers had been used again -- in new but comparable situations not originally envisioned in their composition. The Lord's Song in a Foreign Land offers contemporary Christians a method for applying the psalms to their lives in a way that recognizes the cultural, intellectual, and moral gap between Israel and the Western world. The result -- a meaningful, personal and prayerful connection to the psalms composed in a foreign land.

"For five years, it had been my dream to cover the Vatican, the extraordinary community that is the world's smallest nation, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and an unparalleled repository of art and architecture. As a photographer, I wanted to capture the human side of this age-old institution. With the help of many insiders who have since become close friends, and with the blessings of Pope John Paul II, I was given the rare opportunity to lift the veil of privacy for a privileged look inside the Vatican." -James L. Stanfield, Photographer

This book recounts the life of Lucia dos Santos, the elest of the three children of Fatima to whom Our Lady appeared. It covers the major events of her life: her birth in 1907 to Our Ladys' visitations in 1917; her entrance in the Dorothean convent to Our Lady's request for the Five First Saturdays in 1925; the spectacular 1929 vision at Tuy to the writing down of the Third Secret in 1944; her entrance into the Carmelites in 1948 to the famous Father Fuentes interview in 1957; her silencing in 1960; when the Third Secret was supposed to have been revealed, to her warnings of a "diabolic disorientation", particularly among members of the upper hierarchy; her continual life of prayer, penance, silence and sacrifice, to her death in 2005; and finally her burial in the Fatima basilica in 2006. The life of Sister Lucia, exquisitely written by Mr. Fellows, will not only edify and inspire us, but also encourage us to more faithfully fulfill Our Lady's urgent requests to Fatima.
