Saskatoon Diocesan Mission Office Vision Statement:
The Diocesan Mission Office aims to help the people of the diocese to experience our call to mission beyond the local church as a community of people living and sharing our faith through presence and relationship.
Then I heard the voice
of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send,
and who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I;
send me!”
Isaiah 6:8

WHAT
DIOCESAN MISSION ENCOUNTER TRIP
Ussongo, Tanzania, Africa April 16 to May 1, 2009
WHY
The Diocesan Mission Office organized this trip to encourage, support, and provide an opportunity for people within our diocese to experience what being involved in mission outside of our diocese might be like. This was an ‘encounter’, an invitation from Father Francis Chuwa, pastor of Ussongo Catholic Parish to come and see and be with his people.
Norm Duerr and Arlene Jule, members of our diocese from the Humboldt area, spent time with Father Francis Chuwa, pastor of Ussongo Catholic parish in Tanzania, E. Africa. Norm approached the DMO, who then agreed to play a lead role in organizing 10 people to visit Father Chuwa’s parish in April, 2009. Father Chuwa came to Saskatoon, contacted the diocese and met with Bishop Albert LeGatt. Norm and Arlene accompanied eight other people on the April 2009 trip. This was not a developmental project, but provided an opportunity for people within our diocese to experience mission by being with the people of Ussongo.
While at Ussongo the group from our diocese had the opportunity to visit and spend time at the local boarding school, the health clinic, and the parish of Ussongo with its 30 mission villages.

WHEN
April 16 to May 1, 2009
WHERE
Ussongo is in the Tabora Region in the western part of Tanzania in East Africa. (51 km west of Igunga and 48 km east of Nzega.)
Tanzania is a vibrant, politically stable, and peaceful country in the heart of East Africa. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is beset by problems such as poverty, AIDS, and a lack of clean water, basic health care and access to education. These issues are slowly being addressed. Progress is evident, especially in rural areas such as Ussongo, the village located in western Tanzania which our Saskatoon Diocesan Mission group will be visiting in 2009.
