DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 11 -

On the Sunday after Easter 2000, Sister Faustina Kowalska was canonized in Rome by Pope John Paul II. The Holy Father also established Divine Mercy Sunday worldwide.

Divine Mercy Sunday service will be celebrated by Fr. Patrick Ampani, at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Wiggins Avenue and 12th Street East, Saskatoon.

On Feb. 22, 1931, a young Polish nun, Sr. Faustina Kowalska, saw a vision of Jesus with rays of mercy streaming from the area of His heart. He told her to have an image painted to represent this vision and to include the words: "Jesus, I trust in You!" (By the time of Sr. Faustina's death in 1938, devotion to The Divine Mercy had already begun to spread throughout Eastern Europe.)

Jesus called Sister Faustina "the Apostle and Secretary of His Mercy" and ordered her to write a diary. The Divine Mercy message is not new, but it is a reminder of what the Church has always taught through Scripture and Tradition: that God is merciful and forgiving and that we, too, must show mercy and forgiveness. But in the Divine Mercy devotion, the message takes on a powerful new focus, calling people to a deeper understanding that God's love is unlimited and available to everyone -- especially the greatest sinners.

The message of Divine Mercy includes: Asking God for His Mercy. Being Merciful. Completely trusting in Jesus.

The Divine Mercy devotion includes a special prayer at the hour of Jesus' death, 3 p.m., each day: "You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls and an ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world.  O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You."

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed upon rosary beads:

Our Father..../ Hail Mary..../ The Apostles Creed

On the large bead before each decade, pray: "Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world."

On the small "Hail Mary" beads of each decade, pray: "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

Conclude with (three times): "Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
