Reformation 500

Ecumenism 500 Years

2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation.

This anniversary offers the Christian family a special opportunity to look back and reflect on the last five hundred years of history in thanksgiving and in confession – recognising our errors, seeking mutual forgiveness, and rejoicing in those efforts we have made toward mutual understanding and respect. This anniversary also encourages us to examine our current context and to look to the future in an effort to find avenues where we can more fully witness together to our common faith in Christ, to work toward Christian unity and work together for the world.

In the Diocese of Saskatoon, we will commemorate this anniversary alongside our Christian brothers and sisters with an ecumenical worship service to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29th, 2017 at the Cathedral of the Holy Family (123 Nelson Road, Saskatoon, at corner of Attridge Drive and Forestry Farm Park Drive). Fr. Kevin McGee, Diocesan Administrator for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, will preside at this commemorative service, and Archbishop Donald Bolen of the Catholic Archdiocese of Regina (formerly Bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon) and Bishop Sid Haugen of the Saskatchewan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) will be co-preaching. No registration is required.

Leading up to the service, we also invite Christians in Saskatoon and the surrounding areas to study and dialogue about the Reformation using ‘Together in Christ’, a 5-session study series prepared by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB). The first session will be held Wednesday, September 20th at 7:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church. The remaining four sessions will be offered twice a week at two different location: at St. Philip Neri parish (1902 Munroe Ave S) on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (free to attend, no registration required) and at Queen’s House Retreat and Renewal Centre on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm featuring an ecumenical panel of guest speakers ($25/session at Queen's House – please register: call 306-242-1916 or email receptionist [at] queenshouse.org).

Together in Christ

We pray, oh Lord, that You will lead us to the goal we desire, the healing of our divisions, so that together we may say a united “Amen” to the glory of God.
